Basketball North West Leagues – Competitive Play, Built for Growth

The Basketball North West Leagues were created to make competitive basketball more accessible for clubs across the region—especially those outside Manchester who’ve historically struggled to find the right fit. For many, jumping straight into the national league system wasn’t ideal, particularly for beginner girls teams facing experienced opposition. It wasn’t fun, fair, or sustainable.

In response, we launched our regional leagues in November 2022, starting with Under 12 Boys and Girls and Under 14 Boys—eighteen teams playing meaningful basketball for the very first time. Since then, the leagues have grown rapidly. As of 2025, over 90 teams are now competing across the region, including dedicated girls’ age group competitions at Under 12, Under 16, and Under 19.

We’ve also expanded our Primary-aged competitions, with even more teams taking part in our Central Development League and a growing series of girls-only festivals that continue to build confidence and community.

What makes these leagues special isn’t just the fixtures—it’s the ethos. Everyone involved embraces the idea that we’re all learning. Players, coaches, and officials grow together, supported by a culture that values progress over perfection. This spirit has been key to the success of our REDD programme, and it’s helping shape a more inclusive, joyful basketball future across the North West.

The North West are also very lucky to have a number of vibrant and growing leagues and other opportunities to compete. If you want to know more – follow these links:
