Introduction to Coaching Basketball Award
Start your coaching journey with the Introduction to Coaching course. Perfect for anyone 14 and up who wants to get into coaching basketball, whether you’re a parent or have some experience under your belt. All you need is a basic understanding of the game and its rules.

Communicate effectively in English (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)

1ST4SPORT Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball
This course helps you learn the skills and knowledge to coach high-level basketball players. It’s awarded by Basketball England and 1st4Sport, and supported by the National Governing Bodies for basketball in England, Wales, and Scotland. If you’re aiming to become a high level, successful basketball coach, whether in a paid or volunteer role, this course is for you. It’s especially useful if you want to work as a head coach in a basketball club, school, or college, and even within the elite game. It will also help you if you have ambitions to progress within the Basketball England Aspire Pathway. Understanding that coaches are busy, the course is primarily delivered virtually to fit around your schedule. However, there are some face-to-face sessions on specific dates.
The Level 3 Covers
Performance Profiles: Create profiles for a minimum of three players or a team.
Coaching Programme: Design and plan a basketball coaching programme for at least three players or a team, based on the performance profiles.
Cycle/Phase Plan: Develop a detailed plan for a discrete cycle or phase (minimum of eight weeks) related to your coaching programme.
Session Plans: Produce coaching session plans for at least eight weeks within the cycle or phase.
Ongoing Evaluation Plan: Create a recorded plan for the ongoing evaluation of the coaching programme.
Performance/Development Review: Develop a recorded plan for the ongoing review of performance or development for three players or a team.
Delivery of Coaching Sessions: Conduct at least eight weeks of basketball coaching sessions within the cycle or phase.
Video Submission: Submit a video showcasing individual skills, team defence formation, and team offence formation before any assessment.
Observed Coaching Sessions: Deliver two basketball coaching sessions, observed by a qualified assessor—one training session and one competitive game.
Requirements
Have a Level 2 or equivalent basketball coaching qualification
Experience coaching the same group at competitive levels for at least two full seasons in the past 3 years
Regularly coach and train the same team with scheduled matches
Good English skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
Access to a computer/laptop with a camera, good Wi-Fi, and a microphone for virtual sessions
